What We Believe

What We Believe

The New York Avenue church of Christ invites you to attend any of our services.  We love having visitors and would be honored by your presence.  We are a warm, friendly, and loving congregation, and we are sure you would feel welcome.  We strive to follow the New Testament as our only guide and authority. Our aim is to speak where the Bible speaks, and to be silent where the Bible is silent. We propose to call Bible things by Bible names, and to do Bible things in Bible ways.

The New Testament is our rule of faith and practice in matters regarding the church, her organization, her worship, and the plan of salvation.

Members of the church of Christ contend that the church was established on the first Pentecost following the resurrection of Christ, in A.D. 33, in the city of Jerusalem. The term “church of Christ” is not used as a denominational appellation. It is simply a descriptive term indicating the fact that the church is the possession of Christ. The New Testament refers to the church as the church of Christ (Romans 16:16), the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27) and the church of God (Acts 20:28), as well as other descriptive names. The church of Christ has no earthly headquarters. Each congregation is autonomous or “self-ruled,” and is independent of every other congregation.

The New York Avenue Church of Christ is overseen by a plurality of elders (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; Acts 14:23). The church is also served by deacons (1 Timothy 3:8-13) who work under the direction of the elders. Preachers (1 Timothy 2:7), ministers (1 Timothy 4:6) and evangelists (2 Timothy 4:5) also serve under the direction of the elders.

We preach the gospel plan of salvation that is revealed in the New Testament:

Hear the Gospel

“How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14)

Believe The Gospel

“And, without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6)

Repent Of Sin

“Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent.” (Acts 17:30)

Confess Jesus As Lord

“As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” (Acts 8:36-37)

Be Baptized (Immersed)

“Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38)

Live A Christian Life

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
